The concept for Kidcreate Studio was born from a frustration that many parents, and children, have felt for the past several years. Ever since budget cuts passed that defunded children’s art programs, many children are left without a creative outlet, which can be detrimental in more ways than one. Many children develop enhanced motor skills, visual-spatial awareness, and critical thinking skills, in addition to being provided an opportunity to express themselves. This is why Lara Olson developed the art franchise concept for Kidcreate. She noticed how happy her young son was after coming home from an art lesson and decided to create a program to nurture that enthusiasm and talent.

““He was only getting art once a week, and it wasn’t enough. I became obsessed with the idea of creating this new environment for children to engage their creativity,” said Lara. “It took 12 years to build to this vision, but we’re finally here.”

Kidcreate Studio was developed in 2008, but only started franchising two years ago. 20 units have already been awarded, which can be attributed to the freedom and flexibility that come with being a business owner, along with the multiple revenue streams that only Kidcreate offers within the art franchise industry (our business model includes a brick-and-mortar studio as well as a mobile studio). It’s also a great way to benefit kids and get involved in the community. Lara Olson explains Kidcreate’s expansion strategy, saying

“Now we’re really focusing on national expansion, but we’re doing it in a way I’m proud of. We’re not after speed, but instead, we’re after finding the right partners and the right location. We’re being particular about the franchisees we’re bringing on.”

    Lindsey had been working in the field of community art for over a decade. After she graduated from the College of Visual Arts with her BFA, she attended St. Mary’s University where she received an MA in arts and cultural management. Lindsey worked around in a few different galleries and art centers before she finally realized that her passion was in community art and bringing high-quality art education to children and their families. For the last 10 years, Lindsey was working with the Eden Prairie Kidcreate Studio and finally decided that it was time to open her own studio in Chicago.

      We are excited to announce that a new Kidcreate Studio location recently opened on March 9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa! New Franchise Owner Lindsay Sullivan was working as a part-time nurse and a full-time mom when she decided she wanted to look into work opportunities that would offer a flexible schedule and a better work-life-balance. Lindsay started looking into franchising, and found Kidcreate Studio! The children’s art franchise concept was immediately appealing to her, as she could see the lack of art education in schools from her own kids’ curriculums and Lindsay wanted to make a difference for her children and the other children that live in her community!

      “I decided the time had come to leave health care and find something where I’d be on my own time and could be flexible,” said Lindsay, “And with three kids myself, I wanted something where they could be involved and work alongside me.”

      Lindsay’s Kidcreate Studio is the eighth franchise location to open, and offers a variety of fun classes such as a class on how to draw cartoons and a Glitter! Workshop.

        Lara Olson, the founder of Kidcreate Studio, came up with the idea for a children’s art franchise after experiencing the lack of art education in her own child’s school. She searched for fun children’s art classes outside of the classroom, but couldn’t find anything that fit her vision. So, she decided to take matters into her own hands and start her own business.  Thus, Kidcreate Studio was born! The first Kidcreate Studio was established in 2007 in Minnesota, and now locations exist in NINE different states, and counting!

        “The concept behind it is just so inspiring,” Karen Hansen, Kidcreate Studio’s training director, said. Karen mentioned that she feels like schools simply aren’t doing enough art education, saying, “Being able to still provide that for kids — and going out to different locations to offer that option — touched my heart.”

        Kidcreate Studio helps children to open their imagination and take the thoughts and ideas that they have in their minds and translate them into art! Kidcreate Studio can also benefit children in their schools as kids get to interact with other children their age, which helps them increase their social skills and, in turn, gain confidence. Many of the Kidcreate art projects require the use of math and science which challenges kids to think critically while having fun!
