The school year is upon us! With kids soaking in the final days of summer, parents express how they often have trouble finding engaging activities to occupy their time before they hit the classroom, but Kidcreate is here to help! Andrea Jones, owner of a Kidcreate Studio in Greenville, South Carolina, showcased our art education franchise on Your Carolina, the weekday morning program covering South Carolina’s news and activities. In this feature, Andrea takes hosts Megan Heidlberg and Jack Ropers through explaining the purpose of Kidcreate and the details of her specific Kidcreate Studio location before guiding them through their own DIY candy mosaic art project!
Before getting into the art project, Andrea described what Kidcreate Studio offers as an art studio, and the wide variety of classes and camps her studio is holding for the rest of the summer as well as the opportunities available going into the school year. “We do birthday parties, we do summer camps; we have summer camps going on right now— we have more camps going on this week and next week,” Andrea explained. “And then we roll into our fall season. Since we’re gonna go back to school on the 20th, we have some classes that people might want to do to take a break because they might not be fully ready to be back in school.”
After giving a quick description of Kidcreate Studio and her specific studio location in Greenville, Andrea and the hosts dived right into creating their own candy mosaic. Andrea explained how these crafts can be easily recreated in the ease of your own home, using supplies that are found lying around your house. “You can do this at home, with icing out of your kitchen or candy that you just pull out. You don’t even have to buy these cardboard disks, you can use cardboard and cut it into a rectangle or a circle.” As the three began spreading icing all over their cardboard rounds, Andrea also discussed how her class scheduling works for the art classes and camps on a weekly basis, and what the classes consist of. “We do classes most days. This week, we have classes all week from 9 to 12, our summer camp is ‘Art Academy’, and we do a complement of different things,” Andrea stated. “We paint, we do clay, we do mosaics— but it is all curriculum-based.”
In describing the Kidcreate curriculum, Andrea highlighted how one of the goals of our art education franchise is for children to learn through and about art, and our specialized art curriculum does just that. “Every kid learns something. We like to call it a ‘kid-bit’, so we give them a ‘kid-bit’ of information that is related to art, whether it be an artist or type of art,” Andrea said. “This lesson, the ‘kid-bit’ would be talking about mosaics, and we would explain to them what it is.” Because the children are busy having fun creating and making art, oftentimes, they won’t even realize they’re gaining valuable knowledge about art education, so they truly have fun while they learn. Through our curriculum, we made it a priority to find that perfect combination between having fun and learning.
As Andrea and the hosts began finishing up their art projects by sticking candy into the cake frosting, Andrea wrapped up by detailing the role of the parents and what the kids get to take away from the classes— both literally and figuratively! “We love to have the parents there, and we step them through all of the different parts of the project,” Andrea explained. “And then, when everybody leaves, they actually get to leave with their artwork. Even if they’re doing clay, like this Picasso face or this frog pinch pot.” So, the kids not only get to learn about interesting art techniques and facts while having fun, but they also get to take home the finished product of all their hard work and creativity!
Andrea opened her first Kidcreate Studio location this past October with her husband, Anthea Jones, in Greenville, South Carolina. Huge congrats to Andrea for representing Kidcreate Studio on Your Carolina, and sharing the message and the fun of our art education franchise!
